“Rich Grenyer has been an academic scientist at the Univerity of Oxford for fifteen years, before which he was a research fellow at Imperial College London. Over his time at Oxford, Rich has been involved with the selection and teaching of undergraduate, taught postgraduate and doctoral research students, serving as admissions tutor for Geography at Jesus College Oxford, academic director of the MSc in Biodiversity, Conservation and Management at the School of Geography and the Environment, and the management committee of the NERC doctoral training program in environmental sciences. In all those roles, Rich has worked to radically increase the diversity of students accepted into the University specifically and deliberately as a method for improving academic standards. He is convinced that a supportive attitude, the ruthless disregard of ineffective indicators of ability, and a recognition of the vast disparity in educational resources across the world are all necessary to make that happen.
